Pedagogy, Inclusion and Innovation at The Olive Tree
The Olive Tree vision is “Believe You Can,” where all members of the school community are encouraged to develop resilience, independence and a solution-focused mindset. Pedagogy is at the heart of this vision. Technology is not the starting point; it is a tool that enables us to deliver consistently high-quality teaching, remove barriers to learning and maximise student success.
Our approach is built on a research-informed lesson sequence, drawing on Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction, Cognitive Science and research from a range of sources including the Education Endowment Foundation, Dylan William and John Hattie. This shared framework provides consistency in Quality First Teaching across the school through retrieval, explicit instruction, guided practice, feedback, independent application and reflection.
Central to our provision is a school-designed package of teaching strategies, digital tools and accessibility features that is “essential for some and useful for all.” We design learning experiences that are accessible from the outset, ensuring that support is embedded rather than added later. Approaches that are essential for some learners ultimately improve learning for everyone.
Apple technology enables this vision through powerful accessibility, creativity and collaboration tools that enhance engagement, inspire learning and support independence. Features such as Dictation, Speak Screen, VoiceOver and Live Captions provide multiple pathways for students to access learning and demonstrate understanding, while creative tools on iPad empower students to produce high-quality, multimedia outcomes that deepen thinking, increase motivation and encourage expression.
By combining evidence-informed pedagogy, inclusive practice and purposeful technology integration, The Olive Tree creates a learning environment where every student can participate, thrive and achieve their full potential. This approach also prepares learners for the future, equipping them with the knowledge, skills and digital fluency needed to succeed in an increasingly connected and rapidly evolving world, underpinned by our school motto: “Believe You Can.”
